Kalo Chorio [Istron] is 70 kms east of Heraklion and 11kms from Agios Nikolaos. The new village of Istron sits on the site of the ancient town of Istrona, remains of which are still being found today...because of this, the land closest to the sea has a conservation order and no new building may take place, which leaves the beaches unspoiled, it is also a perfect place for windsurfers.
Koutsounari is 43 kms from Agios Nikolaos and 108 kms from Heraklion, the resort looks like a traditional Cretan village which has been built like an amphitheatre in the pictorial settlement of Koutsounari a small village 8 kms east of Ierapetra on the south east of the island, the location offers a panoramic view of the village and the sea which washes on one of the longest and most beautiful beaches of the area.
Koutouloufari is a lovely, quite typically Greek village, some of the roads are quite steep, so perhaps not ideal for the less able bodied. It is far enough away from Hersonissos to be peaceful, but close enough to stroll down to the beach, shopping and restaurants.
Stalis [Stalida] is a laid-back, family friendly purpose built resort that's handy for the busier resorts such as Malia and Hersonissos. Most of the shops, bars, tavernas are to be found along the road immediately behind the beach. The beach is sandy and spacious and offers all the facilities a family needs.
